Mental health in BIPOC communities: Six tips for closing care gaps
(BIPOC) communities are diverse, with health care experiences and needs shaped by culture, identity, language and family.
BIPOC populations often face barriers to accessing care. Federal data shows that Black, Asian American and Hispanic/Latino adults continue to access mental health treatment at lower rates than U.S. adults overall. In 2024, treatment rates were 45% lower among Asian American adults, 36% lower among Black adults and 28% lower among Hispanic/Latino adults. Contributing factors may include stigma, cost, language needs, limited provider availability and previous negative experiences (KFF).
Providers play a key role in improving health outcomes and access to behavioral health services for BIPOC Alliance members. Here are six ways to support more equitable care:
- Screen routinely. Use validated tools to screen for depression, anxiety, substance use and suicide risk. Ensure positive results receive timely follow-up and appropriate referrals.
- Provide culturally responsive care. Ask how culture, family, language and community may affect care. Avoid assumptions and involve members in treatment decisions.
- Use qualified language services. Offer professional interpretation and translated materials. The Alliance offers cov kev pab txhais lus to members at no cost.
- Close the referral loop. Confirm members were able to schedule and attend services. Address barriers such as kev thauj mus los, appointment availability or uncertainty.
- Review patterns. Consider whether differences exist in screening, referrals, appointments, treatment engagement or outcomes across patient populations.
- Coordinate care. Use warm handoffs, follow up on referrals and coordinate across primary care, behavioral health and community-based services.
