Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month is a time to honor the culture, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. At the Alliance, we also see it as a chance to reinforce our focus on the health and well-being of our Hispanic and Latino members.
Understanding the challenges
We know that Hispanic and Latino communities face some unique health challenges. Sometimes, it can be harder to get the care you need because of language barriers or not having enough information about health. Things like heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer are more common among Hispanic and Latino communities. Many of these health issues can be prevented or managed with the right care.
Working towards finding solutions
We’re working hard to remove barriers to health and make healthcare better for everyone. Here are some of the things we’re doing:
- Speaking your language: We want to make sure you understand your health. We have interpreters who can speak Spanish to help you talk to your doctor or understand your health plan.
- Information that’s easy to understand: We’re making sure all our health information is clear and easy to find. Simple words are used instead of hard medical terms so that everyone can make good choices about their health.
- Connecting with our community: As a local health plan, we work with community groups to offer fun and helpful health events and programs in all counties we serve. Come join us at the Merced Community Health Fair on October 6. Everyone is welcome. We want to make it easy for you to learn about staying healthy and getting the care you need.
- Providing helpful services: The Nurse Advice Line can help answer your health questions. Care Management can help you manage ongoing health issues. Behavioral Health services can give you mental health support. Transportation services can help you get to your doctor. Special programs like Enhanced Care Management and Community Supports can help members with complex needs.
Staying healthy together
See your doctor for regular checkups, even if you feel fine. This is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Taking care of your health before you get sick is called preventive care. It’s one of the best ways to stay healthy. These visits can help catch problems early, when they’re easier to treat. We can also help you learn how to manage conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure so you can feel your best.
