Scotts Valley, Calif., July 24, 2023 — Central California Alliance for Health (the Alliance) is pleased to announce Dr. Dennis Hsieh, MD, JD as the Alliance’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Dr. Hsieh will succeed current CMO Dr. Dale Bishop, who will retire this fall.

Dr. Hsieh brings more than a decade of health care experience to the role, including addressing social determinants of health for the most vulnerable populations. Most recently, he served as Chief Medical Officer for Contra Costa Health Plan. Previous roles include Director of Social Medicine and Community Health at the LA County Department of Health Services’ (DHS) Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Medical Director of LA County DHS’s Whole Person Care Transitions of Care, where he established re-entry programs for complex populations in the correctional system.
Dr. Hsieh received his medical degree from University of California, San Francisco and a Biochemical Sciences degree from Harvard University. He also holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Yale Law School.

“Dennis has dedicated his career to addressing the needs of the underserved,” said Alliance CEO, Michael Schrader. “In medical school, he identified significant legal and social needs of patients that were not being addressed by the medical system, so he pursued a law degree in order to understand how to close those gaps. That kind of mindset, public service and dedication to health equity, along with his special interest in addressing all needs of Medi-Cal members, is a great match to the Alliance’s mission and vision.”

“I’m thrilled to have joined the Alliance where I can participate in ensuring that our provider network is providing quality, equitable and compassionate care to our members,” said Dr. Hsieh. “I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Bishop to understand the needs of our providers and members in order to serve the Medi-Cal community in the best way possible.”

Central California Alliance for Health (the Alliance) is a regional Medi-Cal managed care health plan, established in 1996 to improve access to health care for over 420,000 members in Merced, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. Using the state’s County Organized Health System (COHS) model, the Alliance delivers innovative community-based health care services by connecting members with providers that deliver timely services and care, focused on prevention, early detection and effective treatment. As an award-winning managed care health plan with a vision of “healthy people, healthy communities,” the Alliance remains focused on efforts to improve access to quality health care for its members.
