The Alliance funds affordable homes in Watsonville

On August 10, the Central California Alliance for Health (the Alliance) joined legislative leaders, community partners and new residents to celebrate the grand opening of Sparrow Terrace, a new affordable housing development by nonprofit MidPen Housing.

The Alliance awarded $1.5 million to help make this project possible. Sparrow Terrace offers 72 affordable, stable homes for families in Watsonville, advancing our vision of healthy people and healthy communities. Of these homes, 35 are reserved for farmworker families and six serve people who have experienced homelessness.

The property includes a community center with a full kitchen and learning space, garden boxes, a playground, a restored wetlands habitat and the buildings use solar power. Residents also have access to onsite services such as employment preparation, exercise and nutrition classes and connections to community resources.

“As the Medi-Cal managed care health plan serving approximately one-third of all Santa Cruz residents, the Alliance understands housing is essential in overall health and well-being, especially for our members,” said Michael Schrader, Chief Executive Officer at the Alliance. “This innovative development pairs supportive housing with high quality health care services–helping individuals regain stability and move towards healthier lives–bringing us one step closer to our shared vision: Healthy People, Healthy Communities.”
