Vax Facts Challenge: Merced teens can win gift cards, cash for school in video contest

In partnership with the Merced County Office of Education (MCOE), Central California Alliance for Health (the Alliance) is sponsoring the Vax Facts Challenge, a video contest for Merced County high schools and their students. Students can submit a 30 to 60 second video for a chance to win a Target gift card plus cash for their school!

The deadline to submit videos is March 3, 2025. Winners will be announced by the end of March!

Video guidelines

Video topics may be anything related to vaccines, but preferably the focus should be vaccines that kids need for school. Videos can be up to one minute long and should include positive messaging. Spanish entries are encouraged!

  • Style: Choose your own style! The video could be a skit, interviews, animation, etc.
  • Possible topics: the immune system/the way vaccines work, vaccine confidence or optimism, vaccines that are required for school, the importance of vaccines (why we need them), the importance of preventative care. Video content should be science-based, using the list of vetted resources in the “Contest Rules” section below.
  • Audience: The video may be for high school peers, young children or parents.

Prizes

A panel of judges will select one first place and one runner up video. Videos will be released on MCOE’s website, the Alliance’s social channels and other communication channels. They will also be promoted to the media. Winning student teams are also encouraged to promote their videos on their own social media!

First place

  • The first-place school (school where the winning video comes from) will receive $1,500 cash.
  • The student team that created the video will receive one $500 Target gift card and a certificate of appreciation.

Runner up

  • The runner up school (school where the winning video comes from) will receive $750 cash.
  • The student team will receive one $250 Target gift card and a certificate of appreciation.

How to submit

Student teams can submit their videos in the WMA, MPG, AVI or MP4 video file format (MP4 is preferred).

Videos must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. PST on March 3, 2025.

Contest rules

  • Open to all Merced County high school students.
  • Videos must have a title and be no longer than one minute.
  • No profanity or crude language, offensive imagery, political or religious messaging.
  • No use of AI content or imagery.
  • No product placement, branded vaccines (such as Pfizer or Moderna), copyrighted music or imagery, logos or branded apparel.
  • Any instances of plagiarism will be immediately disqualified.
  • The Alliance and MCOE have complete discretion to choose judges and determine winners.
  • By submitting an entry, you grant the Alliance and MCOE an irrevocable, perpetual and royalty-free right to use, reproduce, edit, display, transmit, prepare derivative works of, modify, publish and otherwise make use of the submitted work. As a condition of receiving a prize, student winners must first sign a Copyright Assignment Agreement. Contest organizers will contact winners to complete the agreement. Note: if the student is under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must sign the agreement.

Citations

  • Videos must reference and cite clinically accurate information from vetted sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Students must submit a list of scientific information that was cited in the video. If you have questions about sources for the video, please email Alliance staff at [email protected].
  • You do not need to list credits in the video itself, but they must be included in the submission form. The Alliance may delete title and credit screens prior to posting. Read more details in the image use and music use sections below.
  • Do not submit an entry that infringes upon any third-party proprietary rights, intellectual property rights, personal or moral rights or any other rights, including copyright or trademark, or otherwise violates applicable U.S. law.

Image use and credits

Photos or video clips used in contest submissions must fall under one of the following categories:

  1. Original content by the student or another individual who has given written permission.
  2. Public domain (submission form must cite where it was found in public domain).
  3. Available for use through a copyright free license (such as Creative Commons) (submission form must cite license).
  4. Purchased imagery: a license was purchased by the student or school to use the image for the entry (license documentation must be included in submission form).

Music use and credits

Music and sound used in contest submissions must fall under one of the following categories:

  1. Original music/sound.
  2. Available in the public domain (you must cite where you found the music/sound in the public domain as part of the submission form).
  3. Available to use through a copyright free license (Like Creative Commons) (submission form must cite license).
  4. Purchased music/sound: a license was purchased by the student or school to use the music/sound for the entry (license documentation must be included in submission form).
