The flu can make you very sick. It can cause fever, sore throat, cough and body aches. For some people, it can lead to serious illness or even a hospital stay. The flu shot helps lower your risk of getting sick and helps protect your family and friends too.
Why you should get your flu vaccine
The flu vaccine changes each year to fight new types of flu. Getting the vaccine every year gives you the best protection. It takes about two weeks to start working, so getting it early is best.
How to get your flu vaccine
Alliance members can get a flu vaccine at no cost. Bring your Alliance Member ID card when you go.
You can:
- Get a flu vaccine from your doctor.
- Go to a local pharmacy.
- Visit your county health department.
Children and teens under 19 should get their vaccine from their pediatrician. Some younger children may need two doses for the best protection.

What to do if you feel sick
If you start to feel sick, help is close by:
- Call your doctor first. They know your health best.
- Call the Nurse Advice Line anytime at 844-971-8907 (TTY: Dial 711) to talk with a nurse.
- Go to urgent care if you need quick help and it’s not an emergency.
- Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you have serious symptoms like trouble breathing or chest pain.
