Protecting our community with the MMR vaccine

Community Icon

The Alliance is committed to keeping our community healthy and safe. One of the most effective ways to protect against preventable diseases is through vaccines like the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Why the MMR vaccine matters

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can lead to severe complications, especially in children. Thanks to the widespread use of the MMR vaccine, measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000. However, recent outbreaks in parts of the country remind us that vaccination remains critical to maintaining community health.

The MMR vaccine not only protects against measles but also prevents mumps and rubella, which can cause serious health issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Children: The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine, with the first dose at 12–15 months and the second dose at 4–6 years.
  • Adults: Unvaccinated adults or those unsure of their vaccination status should consult their health care provider about getting vaccinated.

How you can help

As community partners, you play a vital role in promoting public health. Here’s how you can support this effort:

  • Share accurate information: Use trusted resources like the CDC and the Public Health Communications Collaborative (PHCC) to educate your networks about the safety and effectiveness of the MMR vaccine.
  • Encourage vaccination: Remind the individuals and families you serve to check their vaccination status and get vaccinated if needed.
  • Address concerns: Be prepared to answer questions or address vaccine hesitancy with evidence-based information.

Resources to support your efforts

Together, we can protect our community from preventable diseases and ensure a healthier future for all. Thank you for your continued partnership in promoting health and wellness.
