What is a doula?
Doulas are trained professionals who provide physical, emotional and informational support to expectant and new parents. Some doulas specialize in assisting members experiencing miscarriage, stillbirth or other pregnancy-related loss. In addition, some doulas offer support during and after an abortion, recognizing the importance of compassionate care during these times.
Doulas offer comprehensive support that complements the services provided by community organizations. Doula support contributes to:
- Improved birth outcomes.
- Enhanced parent-child bonding.
- Reduced postpartum mood disorders.
- Increased health equity.
Accessing doula services
Alliance members who are pregnant or have had a baby within the past year are eligible for doula services at no cost. Members can connect with a doula directly—no doctor referral needed. Visit our website for more information about how to find a doula.
Calling all Doulas!
Our doula network is growing! The Doula Recruitment Program provides funding to support the recruitment and first-year costs of doulas providing services to Medi-Cal members in the Alliance service areas. Learn more on our website.
