A place to heal: New recovery center opens

In communities facing a growing need for substance use treatment, recovery depends on having a safe place to heal, rebuild and belong.

Sun Street Centers provides services at their newest facility in Salinas, the Huntington Recovery Center, which opened on June 5, 2025, and significantly expands treatment options for Medi-Cal members in Monterey and San Benito counties.

Funded in part by an $800,000 Alliance Capital grant, the center offers outpatient services, recovery group space and a four-unit sober living facility.

The center supports people transitioning out of residential treatment and expands outpatient options and stability for individuals experiencing housing insecurity. Sun Street anticipates serving over 300 youth and adults annually through outpatient services and the Sober Living Program.

Ruben, one of the first residents in the Sober Living Program, shared that his goals include learning how to live independently, build job skills and to “get educated and just better myself and set a good example for my kids.”

Another resident, George, described the sober living opportunity as transformative, allowing him to remain close to treatment while working toward stable income and permanent housing. He highlighted the strong sense of camaraderie among residents and expressed deep appreciation for the staff.

In addition to capital support, Sun Street received $119,000 in Alliance Provider Recruitment grants to expand capacity by hiring behavioral health and clinical staff.

Sun Street also operates Monterey County’s Sobering Center, a Medi-Cal Community Supports service that provides a safe alternative to incarceration with medical triage and connections to ongoing care.
